The Selection and Care of Enteral Feeding Tubes

An overview of disease states requiring enteral feeding, types of feeding tubes used, and potential complications.
Enteral nutrition is indicated for individuals with a functioning gastrointestinal tract whose oral nutrient intake is insufficient to meet estimated needs. In order to achieve optimal outcomes for patients who require enteral feeding, it is essential that healthcare professionals, indeed all caregivers of these patients, have a good understanding of the selection process as well as appropriate patient care required to prevent complications associated with enteral feeding tubes. The purpose of this educational activity is to discuss disease states that require enteral feeding, and to review the types of tubes used as well as the complications associated with the use of enteral feeding tubes. Nursing interactions to prevent and manage complications are also addressed.
